Flamingos and Vicuñas on the High Andean crossing

Very early at 7:00 AM we depart from the city of Salta heading west towards Campo Quijano and enter the Quebrada del Toro traveling along national route 51 until we pass the Puerta Tastil area. Then we will take the road that takes us north for about 20 km. until reaching the Lagunas del Toro at the foot of the Nevado de Chañi Mountain Range. In this site of dramatic Puno landscapes, flocks of the three species of South American flamingos are concentrated: the Parinas Grande and Chica and the Flamenco Austral. In addition to these emblematic birds, we will observe with our telescope a varied birdlife typical of the Andes that may include the Suri, the Moravian Eagle, the Giant Woodpecker and the majestic Andean Condor among many others. The presence and quantity of flamingos is conditioned by the water level in the lagoons and the time of year, but in general there are hundreds of specimens, of at least two species! After lunch in the countryside tasting empanadas from Salta and various salads, we will resume our trip to the Acay Pass, at more than 5,000 meters above sea level, where we will enjoy magnificent views of the High Andes of Salta and numerous mixed troops of Vicuñas and Guanacos. Then we begin the descent towards the headwaters of the Calchaquí River, discovering new landscapes and wildlife that may include Chinchillones, Gato Montés and even the elusive Puma. Pre-Inca tambos, the Twin Volcanoes and the surprising history of La Poma will keep us very busy until we arrive at Finca de Payogasta where we will stay one night in this historic and stately Vallista estate.

The second day of our Andean adventure is dedicated to visiting new corners of the Calchaquí Valley in search of birds and landscapes, but soon we enter the Los Cardones National Park while crossing the Tin-Tin straight. Exploring these cardonales and environments of Puna in transition with the Monte will be an inspiring experience for us and full of more wildlife. Further ahead, the fantastic Cuesta del Obispo awaits us, along which we will then take our descent ride returning to the city of Salta during a multicolored Andean sunset!
